How to Determine the Standard size of the Brick

OBJECTIVE:

There are following objective for determination of the standard size of the brick.

APPRATUS:

1 feet steel ruler graduated in 1/32 inch division, 5 bricks.

RELATED THEORY:

Brick

Brick:

A brick is a block of ceramic material used in masonry construction, usually laid using various kinds of mortar.

Significance:

It has been regarded as one of the longest lasting and strongest building material used throughout history.

Uses:

Bricks are used in
1. Walls      2.Floors    3. Foundation

Size of the Brick:

Size of the brick has a great influence on the economy of the wall construction. Basic principles in the design of the bricks are:
1. Its length must be equal to the twice its width plus mortar in the joint. Vertical joints in successive coarse (layers) should be broken uniformly.
2. Weight should be such that it can be handled easily. Maximum weight should not exceed 4 Kg.
3. The width of the brick should not exceed an average palm length of the person so that it can be easily grabbed in palm and fingers. This fact limits the width of the brick to 5 inches.
4. The masonry wall is less stable if it is built with the brick whose thickness is greater than the width. A wall which is erected at its edges (size of the brick containing height) is also unstable.
5. Wall should be economical to construct to construct i.e. It should consume less bricks, mortar and results in more output from the mason.

Frog

FROG:

The name, shape or any letter marked on the brick on the face of the brick is called frog.

Procedure:

First of all take five bricks than carefully clean all the faces of the brick with neat and clean towel, then measured the length, width and height of the brick. All the measurement should be taken three times from different point of the brick. Measurement should be taken with one brick. Use the same procedure to find the measurement of other brick.

Precautions:

i. Towel should be neat and clean.
ii. Scale should be accurate.
iii. Measurement should be taken carefully.
iv. Bricks are free from cracks.
