DIFFERENT FORMS OF BRICKS

  1. ORDINARY BRICKS
  2. PERFORATED BRICKS
  3. HOLLOW OR CAVITY BRICKS
  4. COPING BRICKS
  5.  PAVING BRICKS

1. Ordinary Brick:

A brick is a block or a single unit of a ceramic material used in masonry construction. Typically bricks are stacked together or laid as brickwork using various kinds of mortar to hold the bricks together and make a permanent structure

2.Perforated Brick:

A brick or block in which holes passing through it exceed 25% of its volume, and in which the holes are not small (as defined under solid masonry unit, 2), up to three holes, not exceeding 5 sq in. (32.5 sq cm) each, may be incorporated as an aid to handling.
The perforated bricks are used in roadways in order to drain of the rain water from the streets. These bricks have perforated holes in the middle of brick. The thickness of the brick is less when compared to an ordinary brick.

3. Hollow or Cavity Brick:

A hollow clay masonry unit whose net cross-sectional area in every plane parallel to the bearing surface and it is not less than 60% of its gross cross-sectional area measured in the same plane. Hollow bricks are mainly used in the construction of houses. The raw material used in the construction of such bricks are fly ash, cement, lime, gypsum, stone dust etc. These hollow bricks are lighter in weight than the normal bricks. Hollow bricks easier to handle, and have thermal properties different from solid bricks. European-style extruded bricks or blocks are used in single-wall construction with finishes applied inside and outside. Their many voids are a greater proportion of the volume than the solid, thin walls of fired clay. Such bricks are made in 15, 25, 30, 42 and 50-cm widths. Some models have very high thermal insulation performance suitable for zero-energy buildings.

4. Coping Brick:

A brick with a special shape that is used to cap the exposed top of a wall.
Brick which is manufactured for the coping so as to run off the rainwater from the exposed wall.

5. Paving Brick:

Paving bricks are the type that is manufactured to be laid flat on the ground. They are different from the type made to be used vertically for walls and chimneys and other construction projects.

Paving bricks are designed to last when installed in the ground. They can withstand both hot and cold temperatures, snow and rain, and foot traffic.
